NMGM CONSERVATION CENTRE – WHITECHAPEL
Promenade devised the scheme to convert the former Midland Railway Goods Depot, a 70,000 sq. ft. Grade II* Listed Victoria Warehouse, into a National Museums & Galleries on Merseyside (NMGM) Conservation Centre.
Due to the vagaries of the grant regulations, a grant could not be awarded for this scheme. We carried out all the initial predevelopment work and submitted a grant application on behalf of NMGM. NMGM retained us to act as development consultant throughout the scheme which was completed in 1996 with a development value of £7m. The project is one of the largest of its type anywhere in the world and in 1998 the Conservation Centre was awarded European Museum of the Year.
